[00:00:00]
I am Lazar and this is how I see it. Haircuts. Haircuts. We get 'em. Boop. This, this gentleman, an interesting kind of, an interesting wave pattern going on. I've had that a couple times. unintentionally, I think, I think most of the haircuts I've had in life have been unintentional or oh, or unintentional.
I thought you were gonna say flavors of this, like evolutions of this man, but No, no, no. At least his vibes, at least me after haircut, looking just like this. Oh. And me having paid, insert inserted a dollar amount. That's too much. Yeah. yeah. Actually different currencies as well. Oh, a hundred percent. But often sad.
And by the sea regardless of the currency. Yeah. No, I feel haircuts are one of those things where it just doesn't [00:01:00] seem to matter. It's just you're, you're gambling, it's a trust fall, you're like. I am here. Godspeed. Yeah. Yeah. And you, you never know how it's gonna go. Never. Even when you get the same thing every time.
That is, I hear me out hearing, listening. I love some of my barbers. Amazing. Love them. Incredible. Mm-hmm. Great. Other jobs. I'm still like, b Sometimes there's a long time between when I go to a particular barber Okay. Where, yes, I get my hair cut often, but depending on where I am, like it's not always the same person doing it.
Sure. And so it's like when they ask me what we're doing and they'll, they'll say something like, oh, just kind of like similar to what we did last time. I'm like, babe, it's been 13 months. Like, you're good. But like. I can't remember what I did an hour ago, [00:02:00] and you're telling me you remember how you cut my hair 13 months ago?
Yeah, and I know at least one barber he will be like. 1000%. Sorry, one of my barbers. I'm sure there's more barbers who would say 1000% as well. Yeah. I'm not a barber, so f---. I might be totally wrong. I'm just like, really? Or I find it hard to believe. Yeah. Same. Or is it like what you, what she means is, which could be this, sorry.
My best barbers I've ever had women. 10 outta 10. Oh, okay. Similar to astronauts, pilots, most firefighters. I'm hearing a lot of STEM jobs. Stem, stem, women in stem agree. be, yeah. Best barber's ever had women hands down. Okay. What was I saying? Oh, maybe it's just that when you have a head like this, you cut it like that, and so she's remembering the archetype.
She's remembering kinda like the, the vibe. She said, this dome be looking like this, this, this dome be a lot like this other dome. And for domes like that. I snip, snip like this. I, exactly. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's actually, that's [00:03:00] a good point. And I do think, again, not a barber, but I do think a lot of it comes down to, shape of the head.
Well, yeah, no, and like length, Oui, and sorry, that's your line. are you happy to be in Paris? Well, okay. I had a barber that I went to in college. Okay. That was.
Over a decade ago college. Yeah, indeed. It was, hate to hate to confirm that for you. Yeah, I was trying to find a way to say that that was like more graceful than, like, it doesn't feel like that long. it does. It does. It does. No, it does. It does. It does. It does. But he made this comment that. First time I like re-booked with him.
Like different situation. He's now at a different, he's like has his own shop, which is cool, whatever. Okay. He was like, yeah, I remember the shape of your head. Wait, was this recent? [00:04:00] Yeah. Over 10 years ago. Yes. I remember the shape of your head. I remember the shape body, like a back road head, like a. I don't know, sphere, like a Vegas sphere.
Okay, okay. But not that he, yeah, yeah. We kind of went the same direction. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. you went really far up and I went like more the orb thing, but still, yeah, no, yeah. The same, same general like landmark kind of thing. Exactly. Statue liberty. Right, right. When I, when I see a dome like that, I kind of like this replace the torch with clippers.
that man is almost certainly a serial killer. I thought you might say that. Oh, I also thought that maybe there'd be like a Oh, well, like he's hitting on you. He's not, and sorry, of course. That's not where I'm going. He's not, he's definitely not hitting on me that I know. wife, three kids, I think.
also crazy way to try to do it. Oh, for sure. Hey. But until you try, you'll never know. Yeah, I do. Like if I do like the someone being bold, bold, dude, that's in bold. That's, that's [00:05:00] bold. No, but I cannot confirm nor deny the serial killer thing. Okay. Yeah. I mean, I think you, I don't think you would be able to, but Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah. I mean, if you did, it would be too, we'd have to call the authorities. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Or he'd be paying me off, in which case I would still say, Nope, I don't think so. Yeah, that's true. That's, but then collect that money. That's true. And then we would just beep this entire segment. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'd be like, no, no, no. Like that's, that's my side hustle. Yeah. It's like he's paying for my silence. Right. Free haircuts and this sweet, sweet dome. But for the record, I actually do have this, this very prominent bump on the back of my head. Okay. Do you know this? No, it's, do you wanna feel it? Surprise N do I?
I don't. Fine. I think kind of like, okay, hold on. Right there. This? Yeah. Oh my God, there. Okay. Yeah. It feels like you're protruding. Yeah. So I actually do not to, it's getting alien not to brag. No. Quite literally. Not to brag, but like. Maybe you'd remember this head too.
I, I, yeah, there is definitely a bump and everyone, everyone [00:06:00] has that. I think it's called the occipital bone, I do believe. Oh, yeah. Wow. Mine is like very, yeah. Subtle, let's say. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Mine's giving like birth. Defect. Defect. Yeah. Yeah. Mines. Mine's demure. Yeah. Yeah, mine's, mine's giving on That almost killed you, but did it, thank God that almost broke a table when you fell into it as a child.
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah, there's actually no, no damage to your skull at all. But the table didn't make it corner to corner you're winning. Oh, I just don't know, but I do. But truly I so many bad haircuts. Particularly as a kid, I remember getting a haircut so bad, traumatic. I remember getting haircut so bad. Oh, that after it was like a family friend.
Always has all, always is. And it's like how hard could it be? And after now having gone to like career barbers, I'm like pretty difficult actually. Yeah. but No, I mean, it is what it is. And I was a child and you know, she cut my hair and I remember it just being [00:07:00] shorter than I wanted it enough. And I think it was like before picture day or something, as it always is.
Oh, always is, always is, always is. Yeah. And I remember spraying my hair with water and pulling at it to try to make it grow before said picture day, which I think was incredible. As I recall, I think it was the following day. Incredible. And then my mother, who, still very important to me, but like, definitely my hero at the time was like, so, and like often on my side in the family dynamics, like, so are you, us trying to stimulate your hair growth?
I was like crying obviously. Crying, crying, crying. Like sobbing. Yes. I'm like yanking out my hair. I'm like, yeah. Wait, just, do you know what year you were, what grade This was too f------ old. probably like, I was probably a junior. In high school. Yeah. Is that bad? Yeah, I was. Is it giving emotionally undeveloped when you were trying to simulate hair growth by pulling your hair out?
I was like, that is classic like 7-year-old behavior. No, like I'm in fourth grade. I don't know how the [00:08:00] world works. Like when I thought the world was hollow 'cause I saw a single hole for the first time in my life. Well. When I thought we invented color, it kind of is hollow. Well, okay. Anyway. Junior year of high school.
Well, I think it was, I'm obsessed with that. I think straight A student. Straight A student over here. I was good at bio too. not good enough? Not good enough? Not good enough? yeah. I, I, not saying it worked okay, but I just remember, and my mother was also on amused. She was like, okay. Yeah. She was like, you're almost an adult.
That's how n Right, right, right. A year a-- is gonna be leaving here soon enough that you need to get it together. Yeah. She's like, what have I done wrong? No, completely. no. That's actually how I I like reversed engineered how old I must have been because my mother's response was that of like.
Mm. When someone on your, when someone who's normally on your side is like, yeah, I can't, I can't be associating myself with this. Yeah. And enough all you, it's battle on this one. Yeah. It's like, that's actually just a you thing, you know? It's like, you know, you're outside the, the bounds, like the two standard [00:09:00] deviations or whatever.
So that's why I was, I went junior year. It must have been okay. So that's probably one of the worst ones you've had.
Probably, yeah. Yeah. At least the most memorable. But I think that there're, I've always had a problem, and I think a lot of people do, about going into a shop or whatever salon and, and they're like, so you wanna keep it high and tight with a 1, 2, 0 0.5 dot with a little texturing? Is that what I'm, and do you always wear it messy and off to the side?
Lemme see your part. Does it always part like that or what? Yeah, and I'm like. Well, I know it grows. Yeah. And I usually use shampoo. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Unless you're on an no poo journey Oh. Which, oh, whatever. Hey, power to ya just got outta one. Just got, Hey, we poo until we, we don't poo, and I'm not gonna a couple times a week, but I try to, I the poo levels, they, they.
Pop, pop and drop. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I agree. Peaks and peaks and valleys. Yeah. A hundred percent. Yeah. So anyway, I feel like they're like, la la, la, la, la, la, la with a scissor in their hand. Mind you, they're like, right, do you do it like this? Da da. And [00:10:00] I'm like, and I'm already sitting and I've already there's already assumption I'm paying them and tipping them and, and I'm like, I'm also lowkey choking a little bit.
No. Often, oftentimes. And I'm starting to sweat because of the vinyl on the, yeah. Yep. And I'm holding my phone under it a hundred percent. A hundred percent. Yeah. and I'm like, yes. How'd you know? That's exactly what I always do. That's exactly what I always do. And they're like, and they said, well that's 'cause I remember this dome.
Yeah. and then I get out the chair and I'm like, awesome. It has quite literally never looked quite like this. The amount of times I've sat in a chair and been like in incredible looks. Yeah. Do you wanna see the back? Oh, when they're like doing this, they're like moving around even that much where they hand you the mirror.
And it was like me trying to do this. I'm like, I'm trying. I'm like, oh, I don't know. Will they hand you the mirror? Yeah. That's never happened to you that that used to, now they don't have it anymore. And I'm sitting here, it looks like I'm trying to burn ants. I have no idea where to move this thing to try to see the back of my head.
'cause that's something I do approximately once every three [00:11:00] years where they hand me the mirror. Yeah. I'm like, looks good. Yeah. There have been a recently in life I have, there have been a few times where I'm like, actually, can you do X, Y, Z? And that's only because it can be taken off, right?
Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. More often than not, it's kind of just like it's already done. The best work you've ever done. Yeah. Can't wait to go home and immediately wash my hair. Right., And it's because, well, we're not putting in extensions because you're, because you're going home and you're gonna in the shower, pull out your hair to try to make it grow longer.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm sobbing on my lunch hour, pulling my hair out. except we can't, I can't, we can't be pulling hair at, at this age. Just zero.
Yeah. At, at no. Yeah. No, just no. but no best work they've ever done. Every single time. Every single time. and I'll tip you. Yeah. And right. And they're like, and there's just gonna be a question. there always is. yeah. That was definitely not ideal. Yeah. I think the shape of the head is a big one.
It is. I can confidently say there have been two people on planet Earth. [00:12:00] Two people on Planet Earth Dos. Dos deux actually, if we're gonna use the languages that these people speak, two and due. Okay. Yeah. So we're not gonna, we're not gonna name names. That's not really the vibe of this particular pod, but we are gonna give you a, we're gonna give you a sense, a little flavor of who these people might be.
Yeah. Okay. Two people that, what? I've only cut my hair well. Oh. Really shout out to you all stars. Wow. don't know one of your names. Some diva in a suburb of Italy. Okay. Hey, she gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever had in my life. Wow. Wow. Actually no wait. Three dos, no tres. how many of them are women?
One, two. Okay. Hey. Yeah. And all of them. And the one while we were yapping and she was giving me a haircut was like, I need to do your brows. Oh. For free. Okay. I like, okay. One, love a complimentary, anything. Sometimes they don't even wash your hair after. Okay. That's only something I've experienced in the US and I'm like, okay.
I understand there maybe [00:13:00] being a personal preference between washing your hair before or after. I personally would rather, if it doesn't make a difference and my hair's not oily as f---. One time I walked in oily as f---. Kind of knowing it. Yeah. And they were like, I was in a no poo journey. And they were like, we're gonna wash your hair.
And I was like, 'cause it's oily. And they were like, Hmm, that's so wild. When I was on No poo, they never did that. Really? Yeah. And then I have to be like, we're just rinsing at the end. No shampoo. Okay. So, oh, interesting. Okay. Yeah. So you specify, I guess I gagged them every time. But I can understand that specifying like, hey, like I'd rather do before or after.
Mm-hmm. Because oftentimes I don't really put product in my hair almost ever, so. Oh, yeah. And they're like, do you want, do you, do you put any No, no, because I'm gonna go home and wash. Not wash, but rinse out. Exactly. Because So they're not getting the hair. Exactly. Exactly. Exactly. And so that's why, for me personally, I'd rather have it be the after.
Yeah. But times when I'm like, okay, I just paid you X amount and I don't even, I don't, my, my head doesn't even touch a bowl. We don't even get, I might get a couple enough sports for like a cactus. Stop the Sierra Mist Zone. [00:14:00] Correct. And, and like that's it. That's, that's what I got for $50. Like Okay.
That's crazy. I've actually truly only in the US and like at a Great Clips at a Super Cuts like those dire situations. That's the only time I've ne ever had a place where they haven't washed my hair's dire situation. Yeah. They're so popular though. Yeah, they're super convenient. They're, and the fact that you can walk in, yeah.
I mean sometimes I've tried to schedule with a barber like. Weeks. I mean, sometimes it's, it's quite literally like a month or something out and it's like, that can be a little tough to do. I will never leave the place I go without scheduling an appointment. Oh. Even if it's abnormal, that's a great idea.
Like if it's like, like this, like currently Yeah. I have to wait an extra week, not loving it. to get in. Yeah. Well I, 'cause I was like, well, the typical four weeks that I go, okay. we love honesty. Yeah. I'm being authentic. I'm gonna be away. And I was like, well, I don't wanna go before. Yeah. That's too soon.
It's a waste of my money. I'll go a week after. Yeah. We also need more to work with. Right, right, right. For what I'm trying to do. Right. [00:15:00] So I it's, I will not leave without it though, because I know it can be hard to book. That's true. And when you have only tres personas Right. Who are able to do it globally.
Globally, I'm certainly not getting on a flight to Spain. I'm certainly not getting on a flight to Italy. Right. but I will, I will walk to my barber. Right. Very, I need him. Right. I over tip him To keep. To keep him coming back. Yeah. Yeah. Because he's done so well. I mean, some someone, someone on TikTok is gonna comment and be like, you look like s---, b----.
I like your hair. God. Yeah. Thank you. That's all I need. Yeah. I mean, do I have to say that? Yeah, but I do like it though. Okay. Well now I don't believe it. And, but I will say too, it's like sometimes you have to have peaks and valleys. Where when you've seen someone's haircut that maybe you don't have a strong feeling about, you don't notice it.
Mm-hmm. And then they do something that you really like and then you can say, oh, I like your hair. [00:16:00] It's a good cut. Yeah. Maybe it's the same quality of Cut. Yeah. Shape of the head. But anyway, like I've seen your hair a lot of different ways and I think this, like it suits you. I like it. Thank you. Yeah.
Recently someone told me a little too bluntly that I needed to move on from what I was doing. Hmm. I said, and we're still talking about hair? Yeah. Oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah. No, not my job. Not anything else. Not anything else. Although that was, you know, in other ways also probably a metaphor, but I, and I was like, I, I had opened the conversation with them and they were like, yeah, but like a little too bluntly.
Right? And I was like, someone agrees too quickly. Like, like if someone says yes On something that maybe is like a little self-critical. Like, Hmm. You came to that conclusion really quick. You've thought about that before. Yeah. You just didn't know how to say it and so you just said yes.
Yeah. Because you got an opportunity Right. And it was a dam Right, right, right. Situation. So we were bad liars myself, kind of included. Yeah. But talking about, haircuts, right. As we have been doing the whole time. Yeah. I, I'm not talking to the person. [00:17:00] Oh, and I think that's because I have had most of my haircut cuts.
Well, outside of, well, as a child it was dad buzzing our hairs. I was like, so you clearly weren't speaking then? No. It also hurt. He wasn't very good at it. Oh God. Yeah. Were you bleeding? No, no, no, no, no. It was just like rough, you know, like the guard on the leg you mean? Yeah. You know, like it hurt sometimes.
just dad things. Yeah. No, I got this just in the backyard. Yeah. That's crazy. And the way I looked like a, a child in remission. Oh, because I was, I had a buzz cut. Oh. Buzzed super pale, incredibly thin. Not you giving, I just rang the bell every single year of school. That's crazy. If you look at all my school except for fourth grade, then they let me grow my hair out.
wait, wait, wait. So it happened, you also got a haircut that you hated before Picture Day. Yeah, but that was just my hair every day. Oh, I see, I see, I see, I see. Yeah. Yeah. But I hate it every time until I was allowed to grow my hair out and then I had a mop. right. Famously. Famously. But. I think because I was in a foreign [00:18:00] country getting haircuts.
Mm. It was, as we said, I don't know what the words are in English. I don't know what the words are in Spanish. So imagine. Right. So imagine, right. No, like a, A fade, right. Yeah. Like how would you, sorry, that's, yeah. Maybe me like un poquito arriba literally. Yeah. I'm. I know how to say bread and like, oh, you know, over, under, like, that would be very hard for someone.
I mean, you're fluent really hard. Yeah, yeah. I about Italian. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. it's very specific vocabulary in any language I can imagine. Yeah. And I'm just going to random places. Right, right. And then I, I would give everyone two opportunities and then after the second time, I'd be like, never again.
Sure. Sorry. Sure, sure, sure. Adios forever. Yeah. and so I'm not, I just don't talk to them 'cause it's like, I don't know what you want me to say. I know what you mean. Okay. So talk to them as in like the conversation. Yeah. Interesting. Yeah, interesting. It's, it's like awkward.
Almost at this point, but it's like, I don't know what you want. Is it like if they initiate you still? Yeah, I'll like reply. Sure, sure. But I'm not offering things up. I'm not You being, everyone's hated f------ clients. [00:19:00] Well, honestly, I'm just like, here's that word again. Yeah. I'm like, is this not a nice reprieve from you having to like talk about some random b------- sometimes.
So many thoughts I do. So like we were talking about like haircuts as like a service and like an experience and like it, you know, being like, just let go and let God. Let, let snips, I don't know. Yeah. Chop, chop. Let go. Let God let cut. Yeah, exactly. Mm-hmm. and that's definitely a part of it, but then there's also like the experience of it and the social or community aspect.
I don't know if I've ever had this experience, but I feel like in cities and close knit communities a barbershop can be a gathering place, like a third place where people Oh yeah. All know each other. Definitely. And like definitely that's kind of part of the appeal.
Yeah. for sure. Like, I, I think that, I honestly feel like we're losing that in stuff. I don't know, in suburbia. I feel like that is not the case, but I do, I mean that's like amazing, but totally different. from my feel like the salon. Right? Right. Exactly. Exactly. We're just like way more individualized and it's like, you are not here to talk to anyone.
You are here for a service and that is it? Yeah. oh my god. That's me. But I, it's bad. Well, wait, that's me or that's [00:20:00] you? No, that's me. That's bad. Oh, well, yeah. I mean, I'm nice. I'm cordial, but I think sometimes so depend on my mood as to whether I talk to them or not. That's nothing too. It also depends on the questions they ask sometimes.
Yeah, I agree. And like what's going on culturally. I agree. I'm sorry, were we talking about the Oscars? Like, like what my, maybe you need to get over the hump. Unsolicited hair advice. Oh, here we go. therapy. They're, no, but that's what I was gonna say. I think when I'm talking to my barbers at this point, they know me so well.
They're asking me like very specific questions about my life. Yeah. Like, oh, that f------ terrible boss that you f------ hated and she f------ hated you. How she doing? And that's why we're here today. And I said, oh, I, I don't know. We don't talk anymore and it's beautiful. oh, I know which one you're talking about.
Yeah. Oh my God. I don't even know if I know which one I'm talking about. I'm, to be honest, but yeah. and that's [00:21:00] fine. And that's fine. And you know what? It's, it's a job and that's what it was. but you, it's the name of the game, but you, you know, you vent about relationships in your life, like good, bad or otherwise.
And there are just times when that relationship that I had in my job was not positive. And so then they would follow up and be like, oh my gosh, like you were so stressed last time about that, that situation that you were in. Okay. And so I do think it becomes more, maybe not the communal element. Like I, that's a stretch.
But it has been more one-on-one. Therapy vibes, which I don't know if I, I don't go to therapy, but maybe it's 'cause I get my haircut so much. How mu how often? Just kidding. We don't, I'm not doxing you on the pod. not yet.
but no, that's a good point. I think the problem is, is I maybe just, I love, love my barber. Mm. I would do anything for you. but we don't that way, therapist and I do, and I go to therapy. Okay. So, so maybe, maybe it's me. I'm, I'm trying to, I'm putting too much on one person. Yeah. I'm offloading my, my stuff onto the right people.
Yeah. Yeah. But like my aunt, well, [00:22:00] one of those people in your family who you call an aunt, but it's like your mother's cousin who's like the same age. Right. I know what you mean. Yeah. Yeah. She cuts hair and so everyone has one of those, right? I mean, right, right. It's, it's like, you
it's like, I don't know what that is. yeah. With her, if she were to cut my hair, she hasn't in a while because I go somewhere else now. Like, I see what you mean. You what mean what you mean. It just takes the right person, and unfortunately, everyone abroad was not the right person except for the diva who gave me the free brow wax, excuse me. Amazing. Yeah, no, I get that. And she just like wanted to talk about her shows she was watching on the Metro. On the Metro, yeah. 'cause she would like Metro to work. Oh, oh. And she was like, I'm obsessed with this show. And I'd be like, wow. Sorry. . I was imagining you getting your hair cut in in Italy by this amazing woman who's asking you questions whilst on the Metro.
Like I was like, wait, wait, wait, wait. She was a traveling barbershop I actually maybe agree with you in that I don't like being, being asked. I don't like being asked about, oh, like what are you doing for New Year's? Right like [00:23:00] that. I'm like, okay. I know you asked that question to everyone that gets in your chair.
Yeah, you are. Most likely, if you're listening, you're like half listening and I don't care. You better be half listening. I want you to focus. No, that's what, and that's what I'm saying. I'd rather you snip. A little better. Mm. And you not know my New Year's Eve plans. Yeah. And I know that you have to talk to everybody else, so I'm giving you a chance to also be nonverbal.
Yes, yes, yes, exactly. I'd rather us both be, but maybe that's all it takes. It's just at the beginning to say, Hey, b----, snip, snip. That is exactly what I'm saying. But in energy. Yeah. Right, right, right, right, right. And by energy, I mean my face scowling me mogging, while, like a 14-year-old gets hair cut across from me.
I can't. I can't. I can't. I can't. I can't. I can't. Yeah. I feel, I don't [00:24:00] know, there's something very,
you have to do it. You have to because you're, well, I don't know. Well, people go eons and that can be okay. I mean, as long as it's what you want to do. Right. It's all about your intention. So true. I just find it so f------ irritating that I get my haircut every two weeks. There we go. It's been said. It's been said.
That is kind of a lot. It's insane. But I go every four, so it's like, is that really that crazy? I mean, it's double, but. I. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. There was something I was, like prepping for this topic for, you know, approximately two seconds. It was something like the average, oh, this is, I was gagged. The average man spends $7,800 on haircuts in their life, $7,800 USD in their, this doesn't seem like a lot of money life.
Oh, right, because it breaks down, okay, if you live to 78, it's a hundred dollars a year. [00:25:00] Per year. That's like nothing per year. And so I don't know. I didn't run fact checker, but that seemed super low to me. I was like, incredible. Even if you're getting $20 haircut, which I think is right now, probably kind of hard to find, I would think.
Yeah. That's only five times a year, and that they're saying that's the average. There actually are quite a lot of people who would be going fewer times or spending less money than that. I'm, I'm gagged by that. Yeah. I, I feel I'm spending at least 50 with tip included. Yeah. Per, yeah. Yeah. Visit, and I, it's matter.
I feel like it's changes 12 times a year. So much and Yeah. Exactly. Exactly. I feel like it changes so much. I, because I know that the, the two weeks is a little, unconventional. Okay.
